How to Play UNO: A Beginner’s Guide to the World’s Favorite Card Game

It’s the game that has started a thousand friendly arguments and ended even more game nights on a high note. UNO is a household staple for a reason: it’s fast, unpredictable, and incredibly easy to pick up. Whether you’re playing with family or introducing it to a new group of friends, Goblin Games is here to ensure you know your Skips from your Reverse cards.

The Goal: Race to Zero

The objective of UNO is simple: be the first player to get rid of all the cards in your hand. In competitive play, you score points for the cards left in your opponents' hands, aiming to be the first to reach 500 points across multiple rounds.

The Setup

  1. Deal the Cards: Shuffle the deck and deal 7 cards to each player.
  2. Start the Pile: Place the remaining deck facedown to form the Draw pile. Turn the top card over to start the Discard pile.
  3. Determine Turn Order: Usually, the player to the left of the dealer goes first, and play continues clockwise.

How to Play: Match the Card

On your turn, you must match a card from your hand to the card currently on top of the Discard pile. You can match by:

  • Color: Red, Blue, Green, or Yellow.
  • Number: 0 through 9.
  • Symbol: Action cards like Skip or Reverse.

If you don’t have a matching card, you must draw one card from the Draw pile. If the card you drew can be played, you may play it immediately; otherwise, your turn ends.

Action Cards: Changing the Game

The "special" cards are what make UNO chaotic and fun:

  • Draw Two (+2): The next player draws two cards and misses their turn.
  • Reverse: Changes the direction of play (clockwise to counter-clockwise).
  • Skip: The next player is "skipped" and loses their turn.
  • Wild: Can be played on any card. The player chooses the color that continues play.
  • Wild Draw Four (+4): The most powerful card. Choose the color and force the next player to draw four cards and lose their turn.

The Most Important Rule: "UNO!"

When you have only one card left in your hand, you must yell "UNO!" If another player catches you with one card before the next player begins their turn and you haven't said it, you must draw two (or sometimes four, depending on house rules) penalty cards.

Strategy Tips to Win

  • Save your Wilds: Don't use your Wild or +4 cards too early. Keep them for when you’re stuck or to change the color to something you have plenty of.
  • Watch your opponents: If a player keeps drawing when the color is Blue, they likely don't have any Blue cards. Change the color back to Blue whenever possible to keep them drawing!
  • Discard high numbers first: Since cards are worth their face value in points at the end of the round, getting rid of 8s and 9s early reduces your risk.
