How to Play Bomb Busters: A Beginner’s Guide to Defusing the Chaos

If you love the tension of a ticking clock and the thrill of cooperative deduction, Bomb Busters is the next must-have for your game night. Published by Pegasus Spiele, this game challenges you and your team to communicate — without actually saying too much — to snip the right wires before things go boom.

New to the bomb squad? Don't sweat it. This Goblin Games guide will help you keep your cool under pressure.

The Mission: Cut the Wires, Save the Day

Bomb Busters is a cooperative deduction game where players work together to "cut" matching wire tiles. The goal is to identify and pair up all the identical numbered wires held by the team. If you successfully pair them all, the bomb is defused. If you make too many mistakes or run out of time, the game ends with a bang.

The Setup

To begin your mission, follow these steps:

  • Distribute Tiles: Wire tiles (numbered 1–12) are shuffled and dealt facedown to all players.
  • Organize Your Rack: Players place their tiles in their holders, visible only to themselves, sorted in ascending order from left to right.
  • Set the Bomb: Place the central board and any scenario-specific equipment (like the Red Wire or detonator) in the middle of the table.

How to Play: Snipping and Guessing

The gameplay revolves around deduction. On your turn, you must point to a specific tile in a teammate's rack and guess its number.

1. Making a Guess

You choose one tile in another player's rack and declare a number you think it matches. For example: "I think this tile is a 4."

2. The Result

  • Success: If the player actually has that number, both of you reveal your matching tiles and place them in the "cut" zone. You’ve successfully defused part of the bomb!
  • Failure: If they don't have that number, you take a strike. Most scenarios only allow for a few mistakes before the bomb explodes.

3. Limited Communication

This is the tricky part: you cannot tell your teammates exactly what numbers you have. You must use the ascending order of the racks to deduce where certain numbers might be located.

Special Wires and Equipment

As you progress through the game's 66 different missions, new mechanics are introduced to keep you on your toes:

  • Yellow Wires: These must be cut in a specific order.
  • Red Wires: The ultimate danger. If a Red Wire is touched incorrectly, it’s an instant game over.
  • Power-Ups: Some scenarios give you tools like "Wire Cutters" or "Scanners" to help you gain information without risking a strike.

Top Tips for the Bomb Squad

  • Trust the Order: Since tiles are sorted low-to-high, you can narrow down a teammate's tile based on its position. If their third tile is a 5, you know the first two must be 1, 2, 3, or 4.
  • Note the Frequency: There are multiple copies of each number. Keep track of how many 12s have already been played to know the likelihood of your teammate holding the last one.
  • Communicate Intent: While you can't say your numbers, you can discuss who should take the lead on the next guess based on who has the most "certain" information.

Are You Ready to Snip?
